// KEYBOARD MODS //
Perhaps the best thing about building your own keyboard (or having someone build it for you) is complete control over the looks, sound and feel! Modifications to the keyboard are instrumental to get you there unless you bought a $1,000 board… then it’s probably pretty good already. Here’s a list of common modding techniques that you can request for your keyboard build.

  • The foam mod is the process of putting foam or another sound insulating material in the keyboard case underneath the PCB. This mutes the sound of keypresses and helps get rid of ‘pinging’ which can be bothersome.

    Please note: if you have a keyboard with LED under-lighting this mod can affect the brightness of the LEDs.

  • The tape mod is the process of putting masking tape (or another not-so-sticky tape) directly on the back of the PCB to reduce unwanted high pitched clicking / ringing sounds when typing and make the sound very concise.

    Please note: if you have a keyboard with LED under-lighting, the tape mod may impede these lights from being at their brightest.

  • Probably the most important mod if you ask most people who have built a keyboard or two… The process of lubing and/or padding switches involves disassembling each individual switch, painting on some keyboard-friendly lubricant (typically Krytox GPL205 Grade 0) to make the keystrokes smoother and the overall sound less scratchy. A well lubed keyboard is a happy keyboard! Oh, and the pads go in-between the switch top housing and bottom housing to reduce rattling.

  • If you’re real picky about the way your space bar sounds you’re going to want to request this one! The Holee mod is the process of putting small strips of adhesive bandages in-between the housings and stems of your stabilizers to reduce rattling and mute sound in your keys with stabilizers (mostly the spacebar but also Shift, Enter, Backspace, etc.). Stabilizer balancing is the furthermore tedious process of bending the wires of the stabilizers until they sit perfectly flat on a flat surface and therefore do not bias your spacebar to one side or the other during typing.

    Please note: This is a premium mod and takes a lot of time. This one will definitely cost you extra :)
